I move through the rest of the morning in a fog. I sit in the quad at the beginning of lunch listening to Sophie talk about her trip to San Francisco, and how great the play was. Marty and I nod our agreement, and all I want to do is ask her if sheâs found anything else out about the fight and the photo and whatever happened to Jakeâs phone.
Right at the moment thereâs a lull in the conversation, Tony shows up at our table, his gaze going to me first. âYou okay?â he asks gently, his brown eyes kind.
I blink up at him. âIâm fine. Thank you for asking.â
âOh.â He hesitates. âI just figured Sophie told you what happened Friday.â
âI did,â Sophie says, smiling up at Tony like he hung the moon and the stars. âYou want to join us?â
âI was sort of hoping I could take you to lunch.â He glances over at me and Marty while we stare at him. âUnless you want to stay here and hang out with your friends.â
âNo.â Sophie pops up, grabbing her stuff. âLetâs go to lunch. You guys donât mind, right?â
She doesnât give us a chance to answer her. Theyâre gone in an instant, and Marty and I are left behind in a semi state of shock.
âDid that really just happen?â Marty asks me once they disappear from the quad.
Nodding, I grab my plastic bag of spicy chili-lime chips from Trader Joeâs and start munching.
âDo you think heâs up to something?â Marty asks after a few minutes of silence. When I send him a questioning look, he continues. âTony. Do you think heâs setting our girl up for some major fail?â
âNo way.â I shake my head, thinking of the concern in his voice when he asked if I was okay. For some weird reason, I trust him, even though I donât know him that well. âTony may hang out with those guys, but heâs the calmest one of the bunch.â
âThe quiet ones are usually the ones you should watch out for the most,â Marty observes, both of us casting our gazes toward the opposite side of the quad, where the popular people hang out.
I donât see Jake among them, which is a complete relief. But I also donât see Cami either, which worries me. What if theyâre together? People get caught messing around in the parking lot at school all the time. Considering weâre seniors, we can leave campus for lunch. Maybe Jake and Cami snuck away to somewhere private so they can doâ¦
Whatever.
The thought fills me with humiliation. Hurt.
A little bit of anger.
âWeâll just have to watch out for her,â I tell Marty. âIf he hurts her, weâll take him down.â
Martyâs eyes go extra wide. âTake him down? Come on, Hannah, we donât have that capability.â
âWe do if he hurts our friend. I know I could,â I say vehemently, casting my gaze toward the popular group one more time. Caleb is sitting next to Diego and his girlfriend Jocelyn, who appears to be yelling at Diego.
